Friday, 5 November 2010

The €42,000 Grade 2 Friends of Navan Fortria Chase on Sunday has attracted a small but elite field. Trainer Colm Murphy has declared his Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Big Zeb who will again be having his first race of the season at Navan.   He faces strong competition from Punchestown Champion Chase hero, Golden Silver, a previous course and distance winner, the mighty Joncol, successful in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown last season and the smart Carthalawn who is having his first outing for trainer Gordon Elliott.   The €40,000 Grade 2 Lismullen Hurdle is also a race to savour and six of the initial ten entries have stood their ground. Aitmatov bids to make it back to back wins in the race for leading local trainer Noel Meade.   He faces a stiff a task to repeat last year’s success however and will have to be at his best to see off challenges from Jumbo Rio, Oscar Dan Dan, Mourad, Moskova and the long absent Baron de Feypo from the colourful Oliver Brady yard.   The third graded race on the day is the €28,500 Grade 3 For Auction Novice Hurdle. This promises to be fiercely competitive and will provide a valuable early insight into this year’s crop of novice hurdlers.   Noel Meade holds a strong hand with his recent winner Prima Vista but this fellow faces strong opposition from the Paul Nolan-trained Far Away So Close, Paul Flynn’s Save My Blushes and Steel Park from the Sean Byrne yard.   A strong supporting card features an intriguing EBF Beginners Chase which will certainly produce many future winners.   Darren Lawlor, Navan Racecourse Manager said: - “The course at Navan is in great condition as the countdown to our new National Hunt season begins. The ground is currently ‘Soft’.
