Joey Murray continues to punch above his weight, year after year. He may only have five horses in training at the moment but you would never have guessed it by the results he is getting.
Only this summer he celebrated a huge moment in his training career by sending out Oristown Boy to win a maiden at the Galway Races.
"That was magic, an unbelievable day," he said of Oristown Boy's victory. "To win a two-year-old race on the biggest week of the year at Galway was brilliant. I could enjoy it, too, because there was no pressure. I knew the track, the ground and the trip would suit and he was in great form heading there so I knew he'd run well."
Oristown Boy did more than just run well, he stayed on best of all under teenager Rory Mulligan to beat Whosinterviewinwho by three-quarters-of-a-length at odds of 15-2.
Murray has devoted his life to horses. He started out with Barry Kelly before moving to Gerry Keane outside Trim and later onto Juddmonte's Ferrans Stud near Kilcock, where he did a lot of breaking and pre-training.
From there he travelled the world to get as much experience as he could - spending time in Germany, New York and onto Lindsay Park in Melbourne - before setting up on his own in Telltown between Kells and Navan, from where he took out his licence in 2015.
Captain Cullen provided Murray with his first winner in August of that year and the horse has the distinction of winning races over five furlongs, six furlongs, seven furlongs and a mile at the Curragh. There aren't too many horses who have done that over the years.
"Captain Cullen was great one," said Murray. "He won nine races in all, would you believe. We've had some nice horses over the years and we're very lucky to have Oristown Boy now.
"I've only five riding out at the minute but that suits me perfectly. It's a number that suits me and I'm enjoying it."
Mickey The Steel was another winner for Murray at Dundalk last Friday night, when winning for a sixth time.
Murray's reputation continues to grow and he hasn't even reached 50 yet. It's not far away, though. Only around the corner in November. Another victory from Oristown Boy and Mickey The Steel before then would be the perfect birthday present.
